How it works

1. Activate Volrath by paying 1, causing it to become a copy of Grim Poppet until your next turn.
2. Activate Grim Poppet by removing a -1/-1 counter from it, putting a -1/-1 counter on Volrath.
3. Flourishing Defenses triggers, creating a creature token.
4. Activate Volrath by removing a -1/-1 counter from it, putting a -1/-1 counter on Grim Poppet.
5. Flourishing Defenses triggers, creating a creature token.
6. Repeat from step 2.

This clever loop turns Volrath, the Shapestealer into an engine by letting him copy Grim Poppet's activated ability to endlessly bounce -1/-1 counters back and forth between the two creatures. Each time a counter is placed, Flourishing Defenses spots the action and rewards your persistence by generating a fresh 1/1 green Elf Warrior token. Because Volrath retains his copy ability and his inherent stat line as a 7/5 regardless of which counter is removed, the sequence requires no outside resources beyond the initial mana investment to keep the counters flowing and the tokens multiplying infinitely.
