How it works

  1. Declare Excava and the creature with Breath of Fury attached as attackers.
  2. Excava triggers, returning up to one creature with mana value 3 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield. It won't enter with a finality counter on it due to Solemnity.
  3. Deal combat damage using the creature that has Breath of Fury attached.
  4. Breath of Fury triggers, causing you to sacrifice the creature it is attached to, then attach Breath of Fury to another creature with mana value 3 or less, then causing you to untap all creatures you control and to get an additional combat phase after this one.
  5. Repeat each combat phase.

This explosive loop centers on Excava, the Risen Past, whose attacking trigger plucks a cheap permanent from your graveyard, while Hammer of Purphoros ensures your entire army—including any newly returned threats—charges straight into battle with haste. The brilliance of the engine lies in Solemnity, which acts as a crucial safety valve: by completely forbidding counters from being placed, it overrides Excava's drawback and lets your resurrected creatures enter the battlefield without their crippling finality counters. With that restriction lifted, Breath of Fury can repeatedly attach to your creatures and trigger additional combat phases every time they deal combat damage, allowing you to sacrifice them, bring them right back with Excava, and chain infinite attacks.
