How it works

  1. Activate Altar of Dementia by sacrificing Flayer of the Hatebound
  2. When Flayer of the Hatebound dies, its undying ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it.
  3. When Flayer of the Hatebound enters, it triggers, dealing damage equal to its power to any target.
  4. Activate Altar of Dementia by sacrificing Flayer of the Hatebound
  5. When Flayer of the Hatebound dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
  6. When Flayer of the Hatebound enters, it triggers, dealing damage equal to its power to any target.
  7. Resolve both Altar of Dementia abilities from step 1 and 4.
  8. Repeat.

This clever loop turns the back-and-forth transformation of Eirdu, Carrier of Dawn // Isilu, Carrier of Twilight into a masterclass in graveyard recycling, relying on Isilu's passive grant of persist to alternate with Flayer of the Hatebound's native undying ability. Each time Flayer of the Hatebound is sacrificed to Altar of Dementia, it returns to the battlefield with opposing counter types that effectively cancel each other out over successive iterations, endlessly resetting its triggers. As it continuously enters the battlefield, Flayer of the Hatebound deals lethal damage to any target while Altar of Dementia simultaneously mills out your opponents, achieving an overwhelming victory.
