How it works

1. Activate Lazav by paying 2, choosing to have it become a copy of Lesser Masticore if it doesn't have a -1/-1 counter on it, or Young Wolf otherwise.
2. Activate Ashnod's Altar by sacrificing Lazav, adding CC.
3. When Lazav dies, if it was a copy of Lesser Masticore, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
4. Otherwise, Lazav's undying ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it.
5. When Lazav enters the battlefield, it triggers, causing you to surveil 1.
6. Repeat.

This clever transmutation engine relies on Lazav, the Multifarious dynamically adapting its identity to dodge its own counter limitations. By using Ashnod's Altar to sacrifice Lazav for two colorless mana, you fuel its shapeshifting ability to alternate between a copy of Lesser Masticore and Young Wolf. Because the persist and undying abilities care about the presence of specific counters, cycling between the two forms resets the condition each time it dies—canceling out the -1/-1 counter with a +1/+1 counter and vice versa. Each time Lazav returns to the battlefield, its native entry trigger lets you surveil 1 while you endlessly repeat the sacrifice loop.
