How it works

1. Activate Lazav by paying 2, choosing to have it become a copy of Safehold Elite if it doesn't have a -1/-1 counter on it, or Strangleroot Geist otherwise.
2. Activate Ashnod's Altar by sacrificing Lazav, adding CC.
3. When Lazav dies, if it was a copy of Safehold Elite, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
4. Otherwise, Lazav's undying ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it.
5. When Lazav enters the battlefield, it triggers, causing you to surveil 1.
6. Repeat.

This brilliant loop turns **Lazav, the Multifarious** into a master of perpetual resurrection by leveraging its ability to dynamically adapt to its own counters. By paying to copy **Safehold Elite** when it's clean of counters, you can feed it to **Ashnod's Altar** for mana, triggering persist to bring it back with a -1/-1 counter. From there, you simply use **Lazav, the Multifarious**'s variable copy effect to pivot into a copy of **Strangleroot Geist**, whose undying ability will then counteract the -1/-1 counter when sacrificed to **Ashnod's Altar** once more. As this shapeshifter endlessly dances between the graveyard and the battlefield, the enter-the-battlefield trigger built into **Lazav, the Multifarious** continuously activates to surveil your library, all while **Ashnod's Altar** rewards your recycling efforts with a steady stream of colorless mana.
