How it works

1. Activate Lazav by paying 2, choosing to have it become a copy of Safehold Elite if it doesn't have a -1/-1 counter on it, or Young Wolf otherwise.
2. Activate Ashnod's Altar by sacrificing Lazav, adding CC.
3. When Lazav dies, if it was a copy of Safehold Elite, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
4. Otherwise, Lazav's undying ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it.
5. When Lazav enters the battlefield, it triggers, causing you to surveil 1.
6. Repeat.

This clever loop works by using Lazav, the Multifarious as a versatile shapechanger that can morph into whichever recursive creature fits the current counter on it. When you sacrifice Lazav to Ashnod's Altar for mana, it triggers either persist or undying depending on whether it was mimicking Safehold Elite or Young Wolf, returning it to the battlefield and automatically clearing away any opposing counters in the process. Every time Lazav returns this way, its entry ability triggers to let you surveil 1, and since the counters constantly cancel each other out upon re-entry, you can seamlessly alternate between your two creature templates to repeat the cycle indefinitely.
