Target opponent loses the game at the beginning of their next upkeep
How it works
Cast Exchange of Words by paying 1.
Exchange of Words enters the battlefield, swapping the text boxes of Archfiend of the Dross and an opposing creature that does not have more than one oil counter on it.
At the beginning of the opposing creature's controller's next upkeep, their creature triggers, causing them to remove an oil counter from that creature and lose the game.
This clever trick turns Archfiend of the Dross's own terrifying upkeep clause into a ticking time bomb for your opponent. By using Exchange of Words to swap the text boxes of your Archfiend of the Dross and an opposing creature, you saddle their creature with the oil counter tracking and the game-losing penalty. Since the text box has been stolen, their upkeep will force them to remove the counter and immediately lose the game the moment it runs dry.
