How it works

1. Activate Ashnod's Altar by sacrificing Pentavus.
2. When Pentavus dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield without a -1/-1 counter on it due to its replacement effect.
3. Repeat.

This looping engine turns a mechanical clockwork creature into an endless cascade of mana and resources. You start by sacrificing Pentavus to Ashnod's Altar for a burst of colorless energy. Because Isilu, Carrier of Twilight (the back face of Eirdu, Carrier of Dawn // Isilu, Carrier of Twilight) grants persist to your other nontoken creatures, Pentavus refuses to stay in the graveyard, returning to the battlefield to be sacrificed all over again.
