How it works

  1. Activate Marath by paying 1 and removing a +1/+1 counter from it, creating a 1/1 Elemental creature token.
  2. When the Elemental enters the battlefield, Tribute to the World Tree triggers, putting two +1/+1 counters on the Elemental.
  3. Activate Ashnod's Altar by sacrificing the Elemental, adding CC.
  4. When the Elemental dies, Resourceful Defense triggers, putting two +1/+1 counters on Marath.
  5. Repeat.
  6. Once you have infinite mana and +1/+1 counters on Marath, you may use its ability to deal infinite damage and/or get creature tokens or +1/+1 counters.

This loop begins by using Marath, Will of the Wild to birth a tiny Elemental token, a process that only demands a single mana and one of its native +1/+1 counters. As that token arrives, Tribute to the World Tree recognizes a creature with power under 3 and hastily pumps it up with two +1/+1 counters, which in turn feeds Ashnod's Altar when you sacrifice the creature for a pair of colorless mana. The real magic happens when Resourceful Defense steps in upon the token's departure, catching those fading counters and redirecting them safely back onto Marath to keep the engine fueled. With every cycle generating more mana than it costs to start over, Marath grows infinitely large and completely fueled to unleash infinite damage or an endless army of tokens upon your opponents.
