Woe Strider

How it works

1. Activate Woe Strider by sacrificing Ashcloud Phoenix.
2. When Ashcloud Phoenix dies, its first ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield face-down.
3. Resolve the Woe Strider ability, causing you to scry 1.
4. Activate Woe Strider by sacrificing Ashcloud Phoenix.
5. Yarus' second ability triggers, returning Ashcloud Phoenix from your graveyard to the battlefield face down, and then turning it face up.
6. Ashcloud Phoenix's second ability triggers, dealing 2 damage to each player.
7. Resolve the Woe Strider ability, causing you to scry 1.
8. Repeat.

This looping engine relies on the interplay between Ashcloud Phoenix dying and immediately slipping back onto the battlefield to fuel an infinite loop. Woe Strider acts as the sacrifice outlet that feeds the phoenix into the graveyard, letting you repeatedly trigger its death abilities. Meanwhile, Yarus, Roar of the Old Gods watches over your side of the board, using its static and triggered abilities to catch the phoenix as it dies and immediately return it face down—and then turn it face up, triggering the phoenix's damage effect over and over again.
