How it works

1. Cast Whitemane Lion by paying 0 and 2 life due to Defiler of Faith and Helm of Awakening.
2. Defiler of Faith triggers, creating a 1/1 Soldier creature token.
3. When the Soldier enters, Elas il-Kor triggers, causing you to gain life.
4. Resolve Whitemane Lion. When it enters, it and Elas il-Kor trigger.
5. Resolve the Whitemane Lion trigger, returning it from the battlefield to your hand.
6. Resolve the Elas il-Kor trigger, causing you to gain life.
7. Repeat.

This clever loop turns the self-bouncing cat into an engine of endless life and soldiers by stacking cost reducers and drain triggers. Helm of Awakening and Defiler of Faith work together to completely eliminate the mana cost of Whitemane Lion, letting you cast it for free by just paying life to the Defiler. Each time the Lion enters the battlefield, it triggers its own ability to return itself to your hand while fueling Defiler of Faith to leave behind a 1/1 white Soldier creature token. Finally, Elas il-Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim sits on the board to capitalize on that endless parade of tokens entering, padding your life total and keeping the loop going indefinitely.
