How it works

1. Cast the artifact by paying 0.
2. Toph, Hardheaded Teacher triggers, earthbending Izzet Boilerworks.
3. Resolve the artifact spell.
4. Activate Thaumatog by sacrificing Izzet Boilerworks.
5. When Izzet Boilerworks dies, Toph, Hardheaded Teach triggers, returning Izzet Boilerworks from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped.
6. When Izzet Boilerworks enters, it triggers, returning the artifact cast in step 1 from the battlefield to your hand, as it's a land due to Toph, the First Metalbender.
7. Resolve the Thaumatog ability

This fascinating loop transforms the usually self-sacrificing Izzet Boilerworks into an immortal engine by leveraging Toph, the First Metalbender, whose static ability turns your nontoken artifacts into lands. When you cast a free artifact, Toph, Hardheaded Teacher triggers its earthbend ability to animate the Boilerworks, allowing Thaumatog to devour it for a stat boost and trigger a return to the battlefield thanks to the earthbend clause. As the Boilerworks re-enters, its own triggered ability forces you to bounce an untapped land you control back to your hand, but because of Toph's land-transforming magic, you can target the very artifact you just cast—returning it to your hand so you can cast it all over again.
