How it works

  1. Cast Mourning by paying 2 life if able, or B mana otherwise.
  2. Each creature you control's extort ability triggers.
  3. Resolve the first extort trigger, causing you to pay 2 life if able, or W/B otherwise, causing each opponent to lose 1 life and you to gain that much life.
  4. Repeat step 3 for each remaining extort trigger.
  5. Resolve Mourning, attaching it to a creature you control.
  6. Activate Mourning by paying 2 life, returning it from the battlefield to your hand.
  7. Repeat until an opponent loses the game due to having 0 or less life.

This clever loop transforms a humble Aura into a lethal drain engine by combining cost reduction and alternative payment methods. With Semblance Anvil exiling an enchantment, Mourning has its generic mana cost reduced to zero, allowing K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth to let you cast it entirely by paying life instead of black mana. Every time you cast Mourning, Pontiff of Blight—and any other creatures granting extort—trigger multiple times, letting you pay more life to drain your opponents and gain it right back. You can then simply activate Mourning's ability to bounce it right back to your hand for another pittance of life, repeating the cycle as many times as you desire to drain the table dry.
