How it works

  1. Cast Mourning by paying 2 life if able, or B mana otherwise.
  2. Each creature you control's extort ability triggers.
  3. Resolve the first extort trigger, causing you to pay 2 life if able, or W/B otherwise, causing each opponent to lose 1 life and you to gain that much life.
  4. Repeat step 3 for each remaining extort trigger.
  5. Resolve Mourning, attaching it to a creature you control.
  6. Activate Mourning by paying 2 life, returning it from the battlefield to your hand.
  7. Repeat until an opponent loses the game due to having 0 or less life.

This loop turns the seemingly humble Aura Mourning into a lethal weapon by repeatedly casting and bouncing it for a tiny life investment. Thanks to K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth, you can bypass the black mana requirements of Mourning and its associated costs by paying life instead, a process heavily subsidized and sustained by Pontiff of Blight granting multiple stacks of extort across your board. Meanwhile, Stenn, Paranoid Partisan sits on the sidelines—though its cost-reduction ability and blink text are present in the package, the true engine runs on K'rrik and the Pontiff's extort triggers draining your opponents dry while effortlessly padding your own life total.
