How it works

  1. Cast Mourning by paying 2 life if able, or B mana otherwise.
  2. Each creature you control's extort ability triggers.
  3. Resolve the first extort trigger, causing you to pay 2 life if able, or W/B otherwise, causing each opponent to lose 1 life and you to gain that much life.
  4. Repeat step 3 for each remaining extort trigger.
  5. Resolve Mourning, attaching it to a creature you control.
  6. Activate Mourning by paying 2 life, returning it from the battlefield to your hand.
  7. Repeat until an opponent loses the game due to having 0 or less life.

This clever loop turns a humble Aura into a lethal drain engine by leveraging life as a substitute resource. With K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth on the battlefield, you can replace all black mana symbols in costs—including Mourning's bounce activation and its casting cost—by paying life instead, a cost easily offset by the life gained from Pontiff of Blight and its granting of extort to your board. While Gran-Gran and Mourning itself round out the table with additional noncreature cost reduction and looter utility, the core of the loop is simply casting Mourning over and over, triggering extort repeatedly to drain your opponents out of the game while K'rrik fuels the entire cycle with your own life total.
