How it works

  1. Cast Ephemerate by paying W mana, blinking Lumbering Battlement.
  2. When Lumbering Battlement enters the battlefield, it and Preston trigger.
  3. Resolve the Lumbering Battlement trigger, exiling Fiend Hunter until Lumbering Battlement leaves the battlefield.
  4. When Fiend Hunter leaves the battlefield, its second ability triggers, returning any cards exiled with it to the battlefield under their owner's control.
  5. Resolve the Preston trigger, creating a copy of Lumbering Battlement that is a 0/1 Illusion.
  6. When the token Lumbering Battlement enters the battlefield, it triggers, exiling the nontoken Lumbering Battlement until the token Lumbering Battlement leaves the battlefield.
  7. The nontoken Lumbering Battlement leaves the battlefield, returning Fiend Hunter from exile to the battlefield.
  8. When Fiend Hunter enters the battlefield, its first ability and Preston trigger.
  9. Resolve the Preston trigger, creating a token copy of Fiend Hunter that is a 0/1 Illusion.
  10. When the token Fiend Hunter enters the battlefield, it triggers, choose not to exile a creature.
  11. Resolve the Fiend Hunter trigger, exiling the token Lumbering Battlement.
  12. The token Lumbering Battlement leaves the battlefield, returning the nontoken Lumbering Battlement from exile to the battlefield.
  13. Repeat from step 2.

This intricate loop is masterminded by Preston, the Vanisher, whose static ability turns any uncast creature arriving under your control into a fragile 0/1 Illusion copy. By using Ephemerate to kick-start Lumbering Battlement, you begin a cascading dance of exiles and returns that constantly triggers Preston anew. Fiend Hunter acts as the vital toggle in this cycle, alternately banishing and freeing your Battlement tokens to infinitely repeat their entry triggers, flooding the board with boundless creature tokens and endless enters-the-battlefield effects.
