How it works

1. At the beginning of your upkeep, Delaying Shield triggers.
2. Holding priority, if Delaying Shield has any delay counters on it, activate Resourceful Defense by paying 4, moving the delay counters from Delaying Shield onto Resourceful Defense.
3. Resolve the Delaying Shield trigger, doing nothing.
4. While Delaying Shield is on the battlefield, all damage that would be dealt to you is replaced by putting that many counters on Delaying Shield instead.
5. Repeat each turn as necessary.

By redirecting all incoming damage into delay counters on Delaying Shield rather than suffering actual life loss, you create a massive stockpile of counters waiting to punish you during your upkeep. However, Resourceful Defense steps in right at that critical upkeep window to permanently defuse the trap: its activated ability lets you strip those delay counters off Delaying Shield before its trigger resolves, safely migrating them onto Resourceful Defense where they sit harmlessly forever. This clever counter-shell game completely neutralizes Delaying Shield's life-drain drawback while leaving you permanently shielded from all future damage.
