How it works

1. Phyrexian Unlife prevents you from losing the game due to having 0 life.
2. Delaying Shield prevents you from taking infect damage due to Phyrexian Unlife.

This clever pairing completely neutralizes damage by turning it into a resource you simply ignore. When you control Phyrexian Unlife, having 0 or less life won't cause you to lose the game, but it normally turns all incoming damage into poison counters via infect. However, Delaying Shield intercepts that damage entirely, replacing it with delay counters instead of letting poison accumulate. Because Delaying Shield's upkeep payment triggers life loss rather than actual damage, Phyrexian Unlife ensures you stay safely in the game no matter how many counters pile up.
