How it works

1. At the beginning of combat, Workshop Elders triggers, making Basalt Monolith a 0/0 artifact creature until end of turn and putting four +1/+1 counters on it.
2. Activate Basalt Monolith's first ability by tapping it, adding CCC.
3. Activate Basalt Monolith's last ability by paying 2, untapping it.
4. Repeat.

By using Workshop Elders at the beginning of combat to transform Basalt Monolith into an artifact creature, you set the stage for a clever reduction in activation costs. Because Heartstone lowers the cost of activated abilities of creatures, Basalt Monolith's untap ability now costs only {2} instead of {3}. Tapping the monolith for three colorless mana and paying just two to untap it creates a self-sustaining loop that generates infinite colorless mana, all while the newly animated artifact enjoys the evasion granted by Workshop Elders' static flying-bestowing ability.
