How it works

1. Activate Ashnod's Altar by sacrificing Wingrattle Scarecrow
2. When Wingrattle Scarecrow dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
3. When Wingrattle Scarecrow enters, Stalwart Successor triggers, putting a +1/+1 counter on Wingrattle Scarecrow
4. Repeat.

This clever loop relies on Wingrattle Scarecrow entering the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter from its persist ability, which immediately prompts Stalwart Successor to trigger its ability and place a +1/+1 counter on the Scarecrow for the first time that turn. Because state-based actions cause the opposing +1/+1 and -1/+1 counters to annihilate each other, the Scarecrow is left completely clean of counters and ready to be sacrificed anew to Ashnod's Altar for a steady supply of colorless mana.
