How it works

  1. Cast Whim of Volrath by paying U mana, changing all instances of "white" on Antler Skulkin to "black" until end of turn.
  2. Activate Antler Skulkin by paying 2, giving Callous Sell-Sword persist until end of turn.
  3. Activate Ashnod's Altar by sacrificing Callous Sell-Sword, adding CC.
  4. When Callous Sell-Sword dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
  5. Callous Sell-Sword enters the battlefield with an additional +1/+1 counter on it for each creature you controlled that died this turn.
  6. Repeat from step 2.

This curious loop relies on cleverly rewriting the rules of the battlefield using Whim of Volrath to fundamentally alter Antler Skulkin's color restriction, allowing it to target any creature instead of just white ones. By paying two mana to grant persist to Callous Sell-Sword (temporarily made a valid target by our text-changing spell), we can feed it directly to Ashnod's Altar for a pair of colorless energy. When Callous Sell-Sword dies and returns to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter, the counter is immediately neutralized by the creature's own ability to enter with a +1/+1 counter for each creature that died under your control that turn, effectively resetting its stats and allowing you to repeat the sacrifice indefinitely.
