How it works

  1. Activate Jan Jansen's first ability by tapping it and sacrificing another artifact creature you control except the Gnome or Artificer.
  2. Jan Jansen triggers, causing it and creatures you control that share a creature type with it to get +2/+0 and undying until end of turn.
  3. Resolve the Jan Jansen ability, creating two Treasure tokens.
  4. Activate Ashnod's Altar by sacrificing Jan Jansen, adding CC.
  5. When Jan Jansen dies, its undying ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it.
  6. Activate Jan Jansen's first ability by tapping it and sacrificing the Gnome or Artificer.
  7. When the Gnome or Artificer dies, its undying ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it.
  8. Resolve the Jan Jansen ability, creating two Treasure tokens.
  9. Activate a Treasure by tapping and sacrificing it, adding B mana.
  10. Activate Retribution of the Ancients by paying B mana and removing the +1/+1 counter from Jan Jansen and the other Gnome or Artificer, giving a creature -2/-2 until end of turn.
  11. Repeat from step 4.

This clever loop transforms Jan Jansen, Chaos Crafter into a self-sustaining engine of creation and destruction. By tapping Jan Jansen to sacrifice an artifact creature, you trigger Haunted One to grant your commander and its fellow creature types undying, allowing Ashnod's Altar to safely harvest Jan Jansen for colorless mana while its undying trigger brings it right back with a +1/+1 counter. You can then use Ashnod's Altar to sacrifice the newly spawned tokens or Jan Jansen itself over and over, while the Treasures you generate are cashed in for black mana to fuel Retribution of the Ancients. Retribution of the Ancients conveniently strips away those accumulated +1/+1 counters to shrink opposing creatures out of existence, leaving you with an infinite supply of tokens, mana, and death triggers to overwhelm the table.
