How it works

1. Activate Thopter Squadron's first ability by paying 1 and removing a +1/+1 counter from it, creating two 1/1 Thopter artifact creature tokens.
2. Activate Ashnod's Altar by sacrificing a Thopter, adding CC.
3. Activate Thopter Squadron's second ability by paying 1 and sacrificing the Thopter, putting a +1/+1 counter on it.
4. Repeat.

This clever loop turns Thopter Squadron's self-contained counter-manipulation into a positive energy engine by leveraging the passive amplification of Mondrak, Glory Dominus. When you spend one mana to remove a counter and pop out a thopter, Mondrak doubles the production into two flying tokens instead of one. Sacrificing one of those tokens to Ashnod's Altar yields two colorless mana—more than enough to fund the {1} activation cost to sacrifice the second thopter back into Thopter Squadron and replenish its +1/+1 counter. Because you generate excess mana and tokens on every iteration, you can infinitely cycle your resources to produce limitless death triggers, enters-the-battlefield events, and leaves-the-battlefield triggers.
