How it works

1. Cast the artifact by paying 0.
2. Toph, Hardheaded Teacher triggers, earthbending Rakdos Carnarium.
3. Resolve the artifact spell.
4. Activate Ashnod's Altar by sacrificing Rakdos Carnarium.
5. When Rakdos Carnarium dies, Toph, Hardheaded Teach triggers, returning Rakdos Carnarium from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped.
6. When Rakdos Carnarium enters, it triggers, returning the artifact cast in step 1 from the battlefield to your hand, as it's a land due to Toph, the First Metalbender.
7. Repeat.

This ingenious loop transforms ordinary artifact casting into a perpetual engine by letting Toph, the First Metalbender redefine your nontoken artifacts as lands. Once your free artifact is safely on the battlefield, Toph, Hardheaded Teacher triggers to animate Rakdos Carnarium into an earthbent creature land, which you can immediately feed to Ashnod's Altar for a burst of colorless mana. Because Rakdos Carnarium is technically a land under Toph, the First Metalbender's influence, its own entry trigger bounces the free artifact right back to your hand to restart the cycle, while its death trigger returns it to the battlefield through the earthbend mechanic.
