How it works
Activate Kumena's first ability by tapping another nontoken Merfolk you control.
Deeproot Pilgrimage triggers, creating a 1/1 Merfolk creature token.
Resolve the Kumena ability.
Activate Ashnod's Altar by sacrificing the Merfolk token.
When the Merfolk dies, Faces of the Past triggers, untapping all Merfolk.
Repeat.
This clever engine transforms the quiet tide of a Merfolk school into a roaring torrent by turning every tap into fresh fodder. You start by using Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca to tap a nontoken Merfolk, which immediately coaxes a 1/1 token out of Deeproot Pilgrimage's enchantment trigger. That fresh token is then fed directly to Ashnod's Altar to generate colorless mana and trigger a death, which is where Faces of the Past steps in to untap all your Merfolk (including the one you originally tapped for Kumena). Because everything resets, you can loop this process indefinitely to generate infinite mana, countless tokens, and even draw your whole deck or pump your board using Kumena's other activated abilities.
