How it works

1. Activate Ashnod's Altar by sacrificing the persist or undying creature, adding CC.
2. When the persist or undying creature dies, its persist or undying ability and Nim Deathmantle trigger.
3. Resolve the Nim Deathmantle trigger, choosing not to pay.
4. Resolve the creature's trigger, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a +1/+1 or -1/-1 counter on it.
5. Activate Ashnod's Altar by sacrificing the persist or undying creature, adding CC.
6. When the persist or undying creature dies, Nim Deathmantle triggers, causing you to pay 4 to return the persist or undying creature from your graveyard to the battlefield.
7. Repeat.

This clever loop turns any creature with persist or undying into an engine for infinite sacrifices and death triggers, fueled entirely by the mana-generating power of Ashnod's Altar. While the altar provides the initial sacrifice outlet and refunds two colorless mana per trip, Nim Deathmantle steps in as the crucial bridge—its triggered ability takes advantage of the creature's native reincarnation mechanics, letting you pay the required four mana to continuously recur your doomed threat.
