How it works

1. Activate Ashnod's Altar by sacrificing the persist creature, adding CC.
2. When the persist creature dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
3. When the persist creature enters the battlefield, its fabricate ability triggers, putting a +1/+1 counter on it.
4. Repeat.

By turning every creature you control into a fabrication engine, Cayth, Famed Mechanist ensures that your persist creatures never truly stay down, instantly entering the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter to cancel out their recurring -1/-1 counters. Feed these endlessly looping creatures directly into Ashnod's Altar, and you'll convert their cyclical sacrifice into a boundless reservoir of colorless mana alongside infinite entry and death triggers.
