How it works

1. Activate Ashnod's Altar by sacrificing Virtuous Variant.
2. When Virtuous Variant dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
3. When Virtuous Variant enters, it triggers, putting a +1/+1 counter on it.
4. Repeat.

This clever loop relies on the transforming side of Eirdu, Carrier of Dawn // Isilu, Carrier of Twilight (specifically its Isilu face) to grant persist to your other nontoken creatures, allowing Virtuous Variant to repeatedly dive into Ashnod's Altar for fuel. Whenever Virtuous Variant dies and returns to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter thanks to that granted persist, its own enters-the-battlefield ability places a +1/+1 counter on it; state-based actions then immediately cause these two opposing counters to annihilate one another, leaving the creature completely clean and ready to be sacrificed all over again.
