How it works

1. Activate Ashnod's Altar by sacrificing the other Mutant.
2. When the Mutant dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
3. When the Mutant enters, X-23 triggers, putting a +1/+1 counter on X-23 and the other Mutant.
4. Repeat.

This elegant engine transforms the front-facing Eirdu, Carrier of Dawn into its Isilu, Carrier of Twilight side to grant your team persist, ensuring your creatures refuse to stay in the graveyard. When you sacrifice a creature to Ashnod's Altar, it immediately returns thanks to that persist ability with a -1/-1 counter, while simultaneously fueling your mana pool with colorless energy. As it enters the battlefield, X-23, Deadly Weapon triggers to place a +1/+1 counter on both itself and the returning creature, beautifully neutralizing the -1/-1 counter via state-based actions and setting up the entire loop to repeat indefinitely.
