How it works

1. Activate Shilgengar by sacrificing Kitchen Finks.
2. When Kitchen Finks dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
3. Thran Vigil and Kitchen Finks trigger.
4. Resolve the Thran Vigil trigger, putting a +1/+1 counter on Kitchen Finks.
5. Resolve the Kitchen Finks trigger, causing you to gain 2 life
6. Resolve the Shilgengar ability
7. Repeat.

This loop turns Kitchen Finks and Shilgengar, Sire of Famine into an endless engine for sacrifice and life gain, fueled further by the steady resource generation of Blood tokens. Every time Kitchen Finks dies to Shilgengar's altar, its persist ability brings it back with a -1/-1 counter, while Thran Vigil cleverly spots the card leaving your graveyard and steps in to place a +1/+1 counter on Kitchen Finks. Because +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters actively annihilate each other through state-based actions, Kitchen Finks is miraculously wiped clean of its counter burden and stands ready to be sacrificed all over again.
