How it works

1. Activate Shilgengar by sacrificing Gravelgill Axeshark.

3. Thran Vigil triggers, putting a +1/+1 counter on Gravelgill Axeshark.
4. Resolve the Shilgengar ability.
5. Repeat.

This clever loop revolves around Shilgengar, Sire of Famine serving as both the sacrifice outlet and the payoff, using Gravelgill Axeshark to constantly feed the engine. When you sacrifice Gravelgill Axeshark to Shilgengar, its persist ability brings it right back from the graveyard to the battlefield, which conveniently causes a card to leave your graveyard during your turn. This graveyard departure triggers Thran Vigil, placing a +1/+1 counter on Gravelgill Axeshark that immediately neutralizes the incoming -1/-1 counter through state-based actions.
