How it works

1. Activate Shilgengar by sacrificing Lingering Tormentor.
2. When Lingering Tormentor dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
3. Thran Vigil triggers, putting a +1/+1 counter on Lingering Tormentor.
4. Resolve the Shilgengar ability.
5. Repeat.

This loop centers around Shilgengar, Sire of Famine turning our sacrificial offerings into endless Blood tokens, but the real engine thrives on the interaction between Lingering Tormentor and Thran Vigil. Every time Lingering Tormentor dies and triggers its persist ability to return with a -1/-1 counter, Thran Vigil watches an artifact or creature card leave the graveyard and instantly counters that penalty by placing a +1/+1 counter on the Tormentor, neutralizing the -1/-1 counter through state-based actions. This allows Shilgengar, Sire of Famine to sacrifice Lingering Tormentor over and over again, generating an infinite stream of sacrifice triggers, graveyard departures, and Blood tokens.
