How it works

1. Activate Umbral Collar Zealot by sacrificing Obstinate Gargoyle.
2. When Obstinate Gargoyle dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
3. Thran Vigil triggers, putting a +1/+1 counter on Obstinate Gargoyle.
4. Resolve the Umbral Collar Zealot ability.
5. Repeat.

This clever loop turns the graveyard into a revolving door by feeding Obstinate Gargoyle to Umbral Collar Zealot's sacrifice outlet. Because the Gargoyle's persist ability returns it with a -1/-1 counter, its departure from the graveyard simultaneously wakes up Thran Vigil, which uses that exact moment to place a neutralizing +1/+1 counter on the Gargoyle. State-based actions immediately cancel out the -1/+1 and -1/-1 counters, leaving the Gargoyle unmarked, modified, and ready to be sacrificed all over again while feeding you infinite surveil triggers.
