How it works
- Activate Blood Pet by sacrificing it.
- When Blood Pet dies, Mortuary and Carmen trigger.
- Resolve the Mortuary trigger, putting Blood Pet from your graveyard onto the top of your library.
- Resolve the Carmen trigger, causing you to gain 1 life and put a +1/+1 counter on Carmen.
- Cast Blood Pet from the top of your library by paying 1 life.
- Repeat.
This elegant loop centers on Bolas's Citadel, which replaces standard mana costs with life payments so you can cast spells directly from the top of your library. By sacrificing Blood Pet for black mana, you trigger its death, which simultaneously lets Mortuary place it right back on top of your library and allows Carmen, Cruel Skymarcher to grow with a +1/+1 counter and a life gain. Because Bolas's Citadel lets you replay Blood Pet from the top of your library by paying a single point of life, you completely bypass traditional mana constraints to fuel a continuous loop of sacrifices, life adjustments, and ever-growing power for Carmen.
