How it works

1. Activate Shilgengar by sacrificing Willow Geist.
2. When Willow Geist dies, it and Mortuary triggers.
3. Resolve the Mortuary trigger, putting Willow Geist from your graveyard onto the top of your library.
4. Resolve the Willow Geist trigger, causing you to gain 1 life
5. Resolve the Shilgengar ability.
6. Cast Willow Geist from the top of your library by paying 1 life due to Bolas's Citadel.
7. Repeat.

This intricate loop transforms a simple sacrifice into an engine of endless rebirth, using Shilgengar, Sire of Famine to grind down your creatures for Blood tokens while Mortuary immediately catches them on the way to the graveyard and slides them back to the top of your library. From there, Bolas's Citadel bypasses traditional mana costs entirely, letting you replay the sacrificed creature straight from the library while happily trading life for the privilege. As this cycle spins, Willow Geist acts as both your sacrificial lamb and your lifegain engine—triggering its own death ability to gain you life when sacrificed, and growing with +1/+1 counters whenever cards leave your graveyard, successfully offsetting the life you pay into Bolas's Citadel and keeping the loop going indefinitely.
