How it works

  1. Activate Shilgengar by sacrificing Scholar of New Horizons.
  2. When Scholar of New Horizons dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield without a -1/-1 counter on it due to its replacement effect.
  3. Resolve the Shilgengar ability.
  4. Repeat.

This elegant loop relies on the constant recycling of Scholar of New Horizons to feed the dark appetite of Shilgengar, Sire of Famine. While Shilgengar happily converts your sacrificed creatures into Blood tokens and triggers endless deaths, the front face of Eirdu, Carrier of Dawn // Isilu, Carrier of Twilight pulls double duty: its creature-spell convoke turns your extra bodies into casting leverage, but it's the backside—Isilu—that truly makes this engine click by granting your nontoken creatures persist to bring Scholar of New Horizons right back to the field. Because Scholar of New Horizons enters with its own counter to fuel future shenanigans, Shilgengar can sacrifice it over and over again to flood the board with infinite artifacts and triggers.
