How it works

1. Activate Viscera Seer by sacrificing Lingering Tormentor.
2. When Lingering Tormentor dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
3. Hardened Academic triggers, putting a +1/+1 counter on Lingering Tormentor.
4. Resolve the Viscera Seer ability.
5. Repeat.

This clever loop turns the classic persist mechanic into an endless engine by using Hardened Academic as a brilliant passive counter-neutralizer; whenever Lingering Tormentor leaves the graveyard to return with a -1/-1 counter, the Academic's triggered ability instantly answers it by placing a +1/+1 counter on the Tormentor, causing both counters to annihilate each other as a state-based action. With its slate wiped clean of counters, Lingering Tormentor is free to be sacrificed to Viscera Seer all over again, fueling infinite scries while generating an endless stream of death, entry, and leave-the-battlefield triggers.
