How it works

1. Activate Thermopod by sacrificing Scuzzback Marauders
2. When Scuzzback Marauders dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
3. When Scuzzback Marauders enters, Stalwart Successor triggers, putting a +1/+1 counter on Scuzzback Marauders
4. Repeat.

This resilient engine turns the perpetual cycle of the underworld into an endless fountain of mana and triggers. When you feed Scuzzback Marauders to Thermopod, the creature's persist ability returns it to the battlefield bearing a -1/-1 counter. That new arrival immediately awakens Stalwart Successor, whose passive trigger reacts to the counters by placing a +1/+1 counter on the Marauders. Because -1/-1 and +1/+1 counters annihilate each other as a state-based action, the Marauders enter cleanly wiped of counters and ready to be sacrificed back into Thermopod all over again.
