How it works

  1. Activate Jan Jansen's first ability by tapping it and sacrificing another artifact creature you control except the Gnome or Artificer.
  2. Jan Jansen triggers, causing it and creatures you control that share a creature type with it to get +2/+0 and undying until end of turn.
  3. Resolve the Jan Jansen ability, creating two Treasure tokens.
  4. Activate Phantom Train by sacrificing Jan Jansen.
  5. When Jan Jansen dies, its undying ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it.
  6. Resolve the Phantom Train ability, putting a +1/+1 counter on it.
  7. Activate Jan Jansen's first ability by tapping it and sacrificing the Gnome or Artificer.
  8. When the Gnome or Artificer dies, its undying ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it.
  9. Resolve the Jan Jansen ability, creating two Treasure tokens.
  10. Activate a Treasure by tapping and sacrificing it, adding B mana.
  11. Activate Retribution of the Ancients by paying B mana and removing the +1/+1 counter from Jan Jansen and the other Gnome or Artificer, giving a creature -2/-2 until end of turn.
  12. Repeat from step 4.

This fascinating loop turns Jan Jansen, Chaos Crafter into a self-sacrificing engine by leveraging Haunted One's triggered ability, which grants your commander and its shared creature types undying whenever they become tapped. Because Jan Jansen is tapped to sacrifice artifacts like Phantom Train for treasures, its death immediately triggers undying to return it with a +1/+1 counter. That accumulated counter isn't just wasted; it can be spent alongside counters from your other creatures to fuel Retribution of the Ancients, removing them so undying can reset and the cycle can repeat indefinitely for infinite value.
