How it works
Cast First Day of Class by paying 1
Activate Mogg Raider by sacrificing Putrid Goblin
When Putrid Goblin dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
When Putrid Goblin enters, First Day of Class triggers, putting a +1/+1 counter on Putrid Goblin.
Resolve the Mogg Raider ability.
Repeat from step 2
This clever little loop turns the interaction between two mechanics—persist and +1/+1 counters—into an infinite engine. When you sacrifice Putrid Goblin to Mogg Raider, its persist ability normally brings it back with a -1/+1 counter, preventing it from persisting a second time. However, First Day of Class solves this by bestowing a +1/+1 counter upon the Goblin's re-entry, and state-based actions cause that +1/+1 counter and the -1/-1 counter to annihilate each other. With the slate wiped clean of counters, Putrid Goblin is ready to be sacrificed to Mogg Raider all over again, generating an endless stream of death and entry triggers.
