How it works

1. Activate Volrath by paying 1, causing it to become a copy of Grim Poppet until your next turn.
2. Activate Grim Poppet by removing a -1/-1 counter from it, putting a -1/-1 counter on Volrath.
3. Nest of Scarabs triggers, creating a creature token.
4. Activate Volrath by removing a -1/-1 counter from it, putting a -1/-1 counter on Grim Poppet.
5. Nest of Scarabs triggers, creating a creature token.
6. Repeat from step 2.

This cunning loop turns Volrath, the Shapestealer into a self-sustaining counter engine by letting him copy Grim Poppet, whose ability allows you to peel off a -1/-1 counter and place one back onto Volrath. Because Volrath retains his copy ability and can continuously shift into a Grim Poppet with fresh counters, you can bounce the counters back and forth between them indefinitely. Every time a counter is placed to fuel this exchange, Nest of Scarabs triggers to flood the board, turning your recursive counter-shuffling into an endless swarm of Insect tokens.
