How it works

1. Activate Grim Poppet by removing a -1/-1 counter from it, putting a -1/-1 counter on Altered Ego.
2. Nest of Scarabs triggers, creating a creature token.
3. Activate Altered Ego by removing a -1/-1 counter from it, putting a -1/-1 counter on Grim Poppet.
4. Nest of Scarabs triggers, creating a creature token.
5. Repeat.

This loop is a masterclass in recycling counters between Grim Poppet and Altered Ego, which enters the battlefield as a copy of Grim Poppet to keep the synergy identical. Every time you strip a counter off one to place it on the other, Nest of Scarabs swoops in to reward your cruelty by flooding the board with Insect tokens. Because Altered Ego enters as a copy of Grim Poppet, it shares the exact same activated ability, allowing the two creatures to endlessly bounce -1/-1 counters back and forth to generate an infinite storm of creature tokens and enter-the-battlefield triggers.
