How it works

1. Activate Grim Poppet by removing a -1/-1 counter from it, putting a -1/-1 counter on Sakashima's Student.
2. Nest of Scarabs triggers, creating a creature token.
3. Activate Sakashima's Student by removing a -1/-1 counter from it, putting a -1/-1 counter on Grim Poppet.
4. Nest of Scarabs triggers, creating a creature token.
5. Repeat.

This ingenious engine transforms a pair of mutual self-saboteurs into an endless swarm, powered entirely by the way Grim Poppet and Sakashima's Student can repeatedly target each other with their counter-shifting abilities. As you ping counters back and forth between the two creatures, Nest of Scarabs watches the action unfold and floods the board with 1/1 black Insect creature tokens for every single counter placed. Because neither Grim Poppet nor Sakashima's Student ever runs out of counters to strip or absorb in this ping-pong loop, the process can be repeated indefinitely to generate an unbounded army of tokens and enter-the-battlefield triggers.
