How it works

  1. Activate Kumena's first ability by tapping another nontoken Merfolk you control.
  2. Deeproot Pilgrimage triggers, creating a 1/1 Merfolk creature token.
  3. Resolve the Kumena ability.
  4. Activate Bartolomé del Presidio by sacrificing the Merfolk token.
  5. When the Merfolk dies, Faces of the Past triggers, untapping all Merfolk.
  6. Resolve the Bartolomé del Presidio ability.
  7. Repeat.

This clever loop lets you turn your underwater colony into a self-sustaining engine by exploiting shared tribal ties and the cycle of sacrifice. You begin by tapping a nontoken Merfolk to pay for Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca’s activation, which immediately prompts Deeproot Pilgrimage to materialize a fresh 1/1 Merfolk token to replace it. That newly minted token is then fed directly to Bartolomé del Presidio, and the moment it dies, Faces of the Past snaps awake to untap every single Merfolk you control across the board. Because Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca and your entire school are now totally refreshed, you can repeat the process endlessly—scaling up Bartolomé del Presidio with endless +1/+1 counters or cycling through Kumena's other activated abilities to draw your entire deck and pump your army.
