How it works

1. Activate Lazav by paying 2, choosing to have it become a copy of Putrid Goblin if it doesn't have a -1/-1 counter on it, or Butcher Ghoul otherwise.
2. Activate Ashnod's Altar by sacrificing Lazav, adding CC.
3. When Lazav dies, if it was a copy of Putrid Goblin, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
4. Otherwise, Lazav's undying ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it.
5. When Lazav enters the battlefield, it triggers, causing you to surveil 1.
6. Repeat.

This cunning engine turns Lazav, the Multifarious into a shape-shifting chameleon that perpetually cheats death by cycling between two different graveyards threats. By using Ashnod's Altar to sacrifice Lazav for mana, you fuel its ability to repeatedly morph into whichever creature type is currently safe to recur. When Lazav enters as a copy of Putrid Goblin, its persist ability returns it despite the counter, and when a -1/-1 counter accumulates, Lazav simply transforms into Butcher Ghoul so its undying ability can strip the counter away instead. As this morbid loop turns, the built-in surveil trigger on Lazav, the Multifarious lets you sculpt your draws while generating infinite sacrifices and mana.
