How it works
- If Grim Poppet has any -1/-1 counters on it, activate it by removing a -1/-1 counter from it.
- Repeat step 1 as necessary until Grim Poppet has no -1/-1 counters on it.
- Activate Phyrexian Altar by sacrificing Grim Poppet.
- When Grim Poppet dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
- Repeat.
- Resolve all Grim Poppet abilities, putting infinite -1/-1 counters on any number of creatures.
This engine turns Eirdu, Carrier of Dawn // Isilu, Carrier of Twilight into a lethal death-trigger machine by exploiting Isilu's passive grant of persist to your other nontoken creatures. When you sacrifice Grim Poppet to Phyrexian Altar, it generates mana and triggers persist to return to the battlefield with a single -1/-1 counter. You can then use Grim Poppet's activated ability to strip that counter away, leaving it clean and ready to be sacrificed all over again for an infinite loop of death triggers and colored mana.
