How it works

1. Cast Chain of Smog by paying 1, targeting yourself.
2. Lorehold Pledgemage triggers, giving itself +1/+0 until end of turn.
3. Resolve Chain of Smog, causing you to discard two cards and copy Chain of Smog, targeting yourself.
4. Repeat from step 2.

By repeatedly targeting yourself with your own Chain of Smog, you bypass the usual restriction of needing opponents to fuel the loop, since discarding two cards to its resolution allows you to continually copy the spell back onto yourself. This self-referential cycle triggers Lorehold Pledgemage’s magecraft ability over and over again with every copy you cast or create. Because the Pledgemage accumulates a permanent +1/+0 boost for each iteration—enhanced further by its native first strike—this endless loop transforms it into an infinitely powerful threat by the time you are finished.
