How it works

1. Cast Gray Merchant either from your hand by paying 3 or from the top of your library by paying 5 life.
2. When Gray Merchant enters, it triggers, causing each opponent to lose life equal to your devotion to black and causing you to gain life equal to the life lost this way.
3. Activate Bartolomé del Presidio by sacrificing Gray Merchant.
4. When Gray Merchant dies, Mortuary triggers, putting Gray Merchant from your graveyard onto the top of your library.
5. Resolve the Bartolomé del Presidio ability.
6. Repeat.

This elegant loop relies on the constant recycling of Gray Merchant of Asphodel, whose enter-the-battlefield trigger drains your opponents dry while padding your life total. To keep the cycle going, Bartolomé del Presidio acts as the sacrificial outlet, while Mortuary catches the Merchant upon death and seamlessly tucks it right back onto the top of your library. From there, Gwenom, Remorseless is the final catalyst that allows you to bypass normal mana costs entirely—letting you recast the Merchant straight off the top of your library simply by paying life instead, a cost easily offset by the Merchant's own lifedrain.
