How it works

1. Cast Gray Merchant either from your hand by paying 3 or from the top of your library by paying 5 life.
2. When Gray Merchant enters, it triggers, causing each opponent to lose life equal to your devotion to black and causing you to gain life equal to the life lost this way.
3. Activate Umbral Collar Zealot by sacrificing Gray Merchant.
4. When Gray Merchant dies, Mortuary triggers, putting Gray Merchant from your graveyard onto the top of your library.
5. Resolve the Umbral Collar Zealot ability.
6. Repeat.

This clever loop centers around sacrificing and continuously recurring Gray Merchant of Asphodel to drain your opponents out of the game while padding your own life total. While Mortuary ensures your sacrificed Merchant goes right back to the top of your library and Umbral Collar Zealot provides the sacrificial outlet that simultaneously feeds its own surveil ability to keep the engine moving, Gwenom, Remorseless serves as the ultimate enabler; its static attack ability allows you to bypass mana costs entirely and cast the Merchant straight from the top of your library by paying life instead. Because Gray Merchant of Asphodel gains you life on entry based on your black devotion, it easily offsets the life paid to Gwenom, Remorseless, creating a self-sustaining loop that drains the table dry.
