How it works

1. Activate Yahenni by sacrificing Thunderblust.
2. When Thunderblust dies, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
3. Hardened Academic triggers, putting a +1/+1 counter on Thunderblust.
4. Resolve the Yahenni ability.
5. Repeat.

This elegant loop turns Thunderblust into an immortal engine by leveraging the interaction between its persist mechanic and counter manipulation. When you sacrifice Thunderblust to Yahenni, Undying Partisan, the persist trigger brings it back with a -1/-1 counter, but Hardened Academic immediately counters that drawback by placing a +1/+1 counter on it whenever it leaves the graveyard. Because state-based actions naturally cause a +1/+1 counter and a -1/-1 counter to annihilate each other, Thunderblust is left with no counters at all—priming it to persist all over again the next time it hits the graveyard.
